Most Vastu advice assumes you can move a wall, relocate a door, or rebuild a kitchen from scratch. That’s rarely an option in a modern Hyderabad apartment — the layout is fixed the day you buy the flat. The good news: you don’t need structural changes to bring your home closer to Vastu principles. What you place, how you arrange it, and the choices you make during interior design can do most of the work.
Here are 10 practical, apartment-friendly Vastu tips we use when designing homes across Narapally, Uppal, Manikonda and the rest of Hyderabad.
1. Work With Your Main Door, Not Against It
You usually can’t change which direction your apartment’s main door faces. What you can control is how it’s used. Keep the entrance well-lit, free of clutter, and avoid placing a shoe rack or dustbin directly in the doorway’s line of sight. A console table with a small lamp just inside the door is a simple way to keep the entry feeling open and welcoming.
2. Cook Facing East When You Can
Southeast is considered the ideal direction for a kitchen, but most apartment kitchens come with the stove already fixed. If you can’t change the kitchen’s position, focus on the smaller detail you can control: where possible, position the stove so you face east while cooking, and keep the space well-ventilated with a working chimney.
3. Anchor The Master Bedroom Against A Solid Wall
Southwest is the traditionally preferred direction for the master bedroom. If your layout doesn’t allow that, the headboard placement matters more day-to-day — position the bed against a solid wall (not under a beam or window), and avoid placing a mirror directly facing the bed.
4. Give The Pooja Corner Its Own Quiet Space
Northeast is ideal for a pooja room, but a dedicated room isn’t always possible in an apartment. A wall-mounted or corner mandir unit facing east or west works well as an alternative — the key is keeping it a distinct, uncluttered zone rather than a shelf shared with everyday items.
5. Let The Living Room Open Toward The North Or East
If your living room already faces north or east, that’s considered favourable for social energy. Either way, arrange seating so it doesn’t block the natural walking path from the entrance, and avoid overcrowding the space with furniture that forces awkward movement around the room.
6. Choose Colours By Room, Not Just By Taste
Vastu associates certain colours with certain rooms — light blues and greens for the living room, soft yellows for the kitchen, and calming pastels for bedrooms. You don’t have to follow this rigidly, but it’s an easy layer to add during a repaint or renovation without any extra cost.
7. Be Deliberate About Mirror Placement
Mirrors are one of the simplest Vastu adjustments in an apartment. Avoid placing one directly opposite the main door or facing the bed. A well-placed mirror in the living room or hallway, on the other hand, is considered to amplify positive energy and light.
8. Don't Let Corners Go Dark
Dark, unused corners are discouraged in Vastu. A simple floor lamp or wall light in an awkward corner does two things at once — it satisfies this principle and makes the room feel more finished.
9. Add A Money Plant Or Tulsi, Placed Thoughtfully
Indoor plants like money plant and tulsi are common Vastu additions. Money plant is typically placed in the southeast, while tulsi does well near a window with natural light. Beyond the symbolism, they’re an easy way to bring life into a small apartment.
10. Declutter Before You Decorate
This is the one tip that costs nothing and matters everywhere. Vastu treats clutter — especially near the entrance, under the bed, and in corners — as blocking the flow of positive energy. Whatever else you do, a decluttered apartment is the starting point that makes every other tip actually work.
